Green Turtle Great Barrier Reef January 2026

Green Island is one of the largest atoll islands on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. It is something of a tourist hotspot, hosting enthusiastic snorkellers and families all year round. Despite the number of people, the island retains a rich diversity of wildlife, including green turtles which can often be found around the jetties. This turtle surfaced several times just below me, and I love the contrast of the shell and reef colours.
