Red Squirrel photographed at Formby Point, Southport

Red squirrels have been absent from much of England for decades, but are slowly staging a come back across the northern hills from Northumbria to Cumbria.  A more islolated population survives in pine woodland on Formby Point near Southport in North West England. Protected by the National Trust, the woodland is heavily used for recreation, and the squirrels will approach visitors for monkey nuts making this one of the better sites in England to see them.
